In the early morning hours in the town of Nescopeck, Luzerne County, 50 miles southwest of Scranton, crews were called to the house. Four people came out alive, but ten – including children – are feared dead.

It’s unclear what started the fire, but Pennsylvania police said they had launched a “complex criminal investigation.”

The fire broke out at 2:42 a.m. during a family gathering, police said. The cause of the fire remains a mystery.

Among the firefighters who fought the blaze is the grandfather of some of the victims. He is named as Harold Baker of the Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Company.

“I couldn’t go in there to save them. That’s the biggest thing that happened to me… I couldn’t go in there to save them.

Harold Baker told local media: “The address they gave us was the neighbor’s address. It was right next to them. … When we turned the corner here in Dewey (Street), I immediately knew which house it was, just by looking down the street.

He continued: “I was on the first bike and when we stopped, the whole place was completely involved. We’ve been trying to get into them. There was no way we could get in.’

“I lost my son, my daughter, grandson, two other grandchildren, my father-in-law, my brother-in-law and my sister-in-law. All lost.’

In addition, Baker said there were 13 dogs in the house. Not all relatives lived in the house, some were visiting. He said, “The kids who were there and my two kids were just visiting their aunt and uncle. Those were the owners of the house. They were there visiting and going in the pool and stuff.’

Neighbors say they woke up to a ‘pop’ in the early hours of Friday morning.

“I woke up this morning, and I was downstairs watching TV, and I heard a bang. I looked outside and onto the porch. It just started and it was already almost completely involved,” says Mike Swank, who lives across the street.

“There was a gentleman walking down the street here. He screamed, very upset and said that not everyone made it. animals. I mean, a lot of people lived there.’

Both Dale Baker’s parents are firefighters, and the family was “always willing to help anyone in need,” Knorr said. Dale’s mother was not among the dead listed by Harold Baker.

The family’s neighbor told the Scranton Times-Tribune, “It blew out the whole front. There was no front of house, just three sides.’

While state trooper Lt. Derek Felsman told the paper: “Three deceased persons have been removed and we expect many more deceased persons to be respectfully removed from the home after identification.”

He added: “It is a complex criminal investigation involving multiple fatalities.” Speaking to CNN, Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce said, “If the firefighters determine that the cause is intentional and inflammatory, we would launch a criminal investigation into arson.”

Family friend Thomas Crane told the Times-Tribune: “It’s hard because a lot of them were kids. How do you explain to a 2-year-old that their brother is dead?’
