After the surprise cancellation of the HBO Max movie batgirl, fans on social media have reacted to the fact that Warner Bros. made this call. A DC project that had been in development for years, batgirl would have been the last live-action version of Barbara Gordon, played by actress Leslie Grace. Directed by Mrs. Marvel‘s Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, batgirl was expected to follow Barbara’s origin story to become the iconic DC heroine.
batgirl was slated to be an original HBO Max movie, reportedly slated to premiere in late 2022. The main photography was all done by March 31, and the post-production work started right after that. Warner Bros. However, Pictures and HBO Max decided to cancel, in a surprising move that threw fans and industry figures alike batgirl, with no plans to release it in theaters or on the streaming service. Despite the film being largely made, at least with the initial photography, the batgirl movie cancellation is a rare decision.
With this a very surprising move for the batgirl movie, the news has obviously caused a lot of reaction from fans on social media. Many are, for understandable reasons, upset and frustrated that batgirl is suddenly scrapped by Warner Bros., as it marks the loss of a female-led DC franchise overseen by directors of color. On the other side of the comments are fans who are in favor of scrapping the DC movie, for various reasons. View a selection of the reactions about the racks of batgirl below.
Just sell the rights to DC to another studio and stop wasting people’s time

In all seriousness, although I feel bad about Leslie Grace, she deserved better. Hopefully she could play Batgirl in a better project.

I’ll be the outlier. While I’m thinking about demolition #Batgirl a movie that is in post production is a weird idea. Getting rid of projects that don’t fit what you want the DC brand to be, then I say go ahead and do it. If this is true, it’s a good thing they canned it instead of showing it pic.twitter.com/JvrG7NhkiP

Leslie deleted the Batgirl costume reveal from her Instagram…I feel so sorry for her

Warner Bros canceled the Batgirl movie because it didn’t feel like a blockbuster movie — like many of us don’t want smaller superhero stories…not every superhero movie has to be a world-ending threat. pic.twitter.com/M1e11ijxy5

Warner Bros. is a joke. The Batgirl team doesn’t deserve this. #SAVEBATGIRL.
A line that should never be crossed has been crossed, this is extremely offensive to the fans & the cast, everyone who worked on this film. My heart literally aches for them. pic.twitter.com/Q5gofGidWw

Rock was booed at SDCC, Super Pets underperformed, Ben Affleck came back as Batman, and now Batgirl was canceled. All this happened in the last 10 days.

According to the reports, batgirl being withdrawn was due to negative test impressions and Warner Bros. wanted their DC theatrical products”event movies.“The idea of scrapping a project is not unheard of; Warner Bros. Discovery quickly canceled the Wonder Twins HBO Max movie, as new CEO David Zaslav did not want to invest $75 million dollars in the DC property. However, to say batgirl on the shelves after completing the main photography is a huge shock. This rarely happens, hence the massive fan reaction on social media. As many have said, it is extremely disappointing for Grace and the rest of the creative team. Everyone involved in batgirl has been open about their enthusiasm for the project, so they must be feeling a lot of emotions right now.
Although it was inevitable that fans were sad, frustrated or even happy that batgirl doesn’t happen, it will be interesting to see what Grace and other members of the production have to say in the coming weeks. A great takeaway is that batgirl would have been Michael Keaton’s second DCEU project as his Batman, as he will also be appearing in 2023 The flash movie with Ezra Miller. Whether or not Keaton’s Batman will appear in other DCEU movies after that The flash has yet to be seen as his own batgirl material will never be used.
