Rave reviews from critics and box office hits were proof that DC fans were impressed Matt Reeves‘s version of Gotham City in the batter (2022). Fans were also impressed by Colin Farrell who played the umbrella-loving villain Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. The success and positive reception led to the character getting a spin-off series, the penguin (working title).
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Irish actor revealed that he would like the series to start soon. Farrell has kept up with a busy filming schedule lately, which means that shooting for the spin-off series may not start until later in 2023. The Irish actor currently has his hands full with other upcoming projects including Sugar, an AppleTV+ science fiction series set to go into production later this month. Farrell also recently completed work on the survival drama, Thirteen lives which will be released on Prime Video on August 5.
The spin-off series, the penguin was ordered as a direct-to-series project by HBO Max shortly after the release of the batter to incredible success. The news was met with excitement by DC fandom who were impressed by Farrell’s performance, which also received unanimously positive reviews from critics. The series revolves around Penguin and explores his origin story and his rise to major influence in the fictional city of Gotham.
the penguinwhich will be based on DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, will be written by Lauren LeFranc who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Also serving as executive producers are Farrell, Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipskic, Rafi Crohnand Adam Kassan. Warner Bros. Television, as well as Reeve’s 6th & Idaho Productions and Clark’s Dylan Clark Productions, will serve as umbrellas for the show’s production.
In the same interview, the actor had nothing but positive words about his experience working on the batter film and working with Reeves. As such, he anticipates shooting the spin-off series and also hopes to extend his stay in the DC universe with a spot in the coming the batter continuation (The Batman 2) that Warner Bros. ordered in response to the success of the first film. Although it has been confirmed that Robert Pattinson will return to reprise his titular role as caped crusader, Farrell hopes he’ll get the chance to give Gotham’s hero more care in the upcoming sequel.
When asked if he would like to reprise his role in the upcoming sophomore Batman episode, he replied with an emphatic yes! “Oh my god, are you kidding?! It’s so much fun, are you kidding? [with] me? I’ve been around, man. That was an easy sport, I mean… it was a joy,” Farrell said of his filming experience the batter.
Prices the batter director Reeve’s work ethic, Farrell revealed that while Reeves will not be taking the director’s chair for the spin-off series, the penguin, he was creatively involved, adding, “Matt loves his balls, you know, he hovers over the keyboard and just plans the story because he’s so meticulous. He’s so obsessive about what he’s doing, but he’s all over [HBO Max’s] penguin [series] also. I mean, he’s not going to direct it, but he knows the structure of the scripts and who’s going to direct them. And so it’s exciting.” Reeves’ involvement certainly promises exciting things for the coming series.
