Matt and Ross Duffer open about Weird stuff season 5 and Nancy’s love triangle. The Weird stuff character is used to upheavals in her romantic life. In Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show, Nancy starts a relationship with Joe Keery’s character Steve Keery, and ends up with him despite an affiliation with Charlie Heaton’s Jonathan. However, in Season 2, she and Jonathan slowly ignite a romance after her messy breakup with Steve. In the most recent season of the series, the physical distance between Nancy and Jonathan begins to equate to an emotional distance. At the same time, she and Steve must work together in Hawkins and see firsthand how her old beau has come of age.
Although season 4 just finished in early July, there are already talks about it Weird stuff season 5, confirmed to be the show’s last. With plenty of storylines to wrap up, as well as a confirmed time jump and hints that Season 1’s character groups will return, the internet is ablaze with theories. Development of the final season is scheduled to begin in the first week of August, so more information is sure to follow. For now, the showrunners and the main cast have responded to some comments about where the season might be headed, and have confirmed that they know where it all ends. In a show that often prides itself on having something for everyone and likes to pay tribute to the movies of the ’80s, including their love triangles, those who cherish Nancy and Jonathan may have a few surprises in store.
In an interview with TVLinethe Duffer brothers were asked if they are “Team Jonathan” or “Team Steve” leading up to Weird stuff Season 5. Here’s What They Said:
Ross: We love all the characters so much, it’s hard to choose. The last time Nancy actually spent time with [Steve] was the first few episodes of season 2 where he was a completely different person. That was even before his friendship with Dustin, so the Steve Nancy knew and spent time with isn’t the Steve we’ve all come to know and love.
Matt: Steve has grown a lot, just like Nancy, so what happens when you add that to the fact that she and Jonathan [were] separated by such a distance?
While Steve’s character growth has been highly praised by viewers of the show, it’s true that his past love interest on screen hasn’t had many interactions with the person he became. This shows that Steve’s growth was genuine and not fueled by an attempt to recoup Nancy’s favor. However, it is clear in season 4 that he has feelings for his ex, and their chemistry cannot be denied. Where is Jonathan? Throughout Season 4, Nancy proves to be ambitious, moving forward in her career and making attempts to shut down her personal life. Jonathan on the other hand indicates he is stuck and seems to be changing at some points in the season. While he deserves a much-needed break from the pressures he’s been dealing with, he and Nancy may have just grown apart during their time apart.
Whatever happens, the Duffer brothers’ comments confirm that they only have the best interests of the characters in mind. Whether Nancy ends up with her old flame, rekindles her bond with her current boyfriend, or even decides to take on the next chapter of her life solo, it’s certainly based on respect for the character’s trajectory rather than to be a love triangle for the sake of it. With all the high-stakes storylines yet to be solved within the Weird stuff universe, the romance between the older teens may not seem particularly important. But for those who have been in touch with Nancy’s tale of balancing independence and vulnerability, Season 5 is sure to be a satisfying conclusion to her story (just not without some drama first).
