Neve Campbell gives an update on her shout 6 contract after rumors say she has signed on for the sequel. 2022’s scream was able to successfully reboot the franchise by making fun of the current trend of rebooting and remaking classic horror movies. Reviews for the film were mostly positive, despite it being the first scream movie that Wes Craven was not involved in. It also did really well at the box office, making $140 million worldwide, so of course, shout 6 was quickly confirmed by Paramount and Spyglass.
Of scream as a sequel and a reboot, it introduced a new cast of characters while also bringing back Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott), Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers), and David Arquette (Dewey Riley). It was originally thought that Cox and Campbell would both return, but last month Campbell revealed she would not be returning for shout 6 due to a wage dispute. Recently, the rumor circulated on the internet that Campbell had secretly signed a contract to appear in shout 6 and 7 but that the studios kept it a secret so that her appearance was a… Spider-Man: No Way Home-type of surprise for moviegoers.
While the rumor didn’t generate enough steam for Paramount to officially respond, Campbell has now put the rumor to rest. While attending a panel on Mad Monster Party ArizonaCampbell was asked if there was any truth to the rumors of her signing a contract for… shout 6. Campbell apologized, “There’s nothing that I’m afraid to say. Sorry. Sorry guys.”
There’s always the possibility that Campbell is lying to keep her return a secret, but that seems incredibly unlikely in this case. Campbell is not returning because she felt she was not being adequately compensated for what she… scream franchisee. It also wouldn’t make sense for Paramount to try and keep Campbell’s return a secret, as Marvel did with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Campbell just appeared scream at the beginning of the year, and with her character’s survival, fans were already expecting her to return in scream 6. Paramount can get this kind of reaction by bringing back another legacy character like Stu (Matthew Lillard). However, Campbell’s situation seems to be a more serious issue between her and the studio, meaning the news of her absence is almost certainly not just another big marketing ploy.
With Campbell in every scream movie so far, it’s disappointing that Paramount and Spyglass still haven’t reached an agreement with Campbell. Campbell confirmed shout 6‘s story related to Sidney Prescott. But with filming on shout 6 halfway through, even if the studio decides to pay her more, Sidney probably won’t play as big a role as initially planned. The writers will now have to find a proper way to write Sidney out of the sequel’s story, so it’s a little disappointing that Campbell has denied this latest rumor.
