First Trailer For ‘The Idol’ Teases The Weeknd & Lily Rose-Depp’s “Sleazy Love Story” – NBCNEWS

While fans eagerly await the next season of Euphoriaa new show from Sam Levinson will be coming to HBO later this year, which may bridge them. Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name – The weekend. and Lily Rose-Depp will shine the idol, with the first trailer teasing the tone and promiscuity audiences are used to Levinson’s television work. No set release date has been set, though a fall release is most likely, with HBO confirming it will arrive this year.

the idol seems to be a mix of Euphoria and other HBO series The Deuceoriginating from David Simon and George Pelecanos. Maggie Gyllenhaal led the last series, and the idol seems to be pulling back the curtain on the music industry in the same vein as what The Deuce did for the porn industry. the weekend and Reza Fahim are co-creators of the series with Levinson. While there is always a bit of concern when musicians/singers make the leap from stage to camera, The Weeknd appeared in a small role as himself opposite Adam Sandler in Uncut Gemstones.


This trailer doesn’t give much away in terms of story, although HBO has said that “the series will focus on a self-help guru and leader of a modern cult who enters into a complicated relationship with a rising pop idol.” Presumably, The Weeknd will portray the cult leader while Rose-Depp takes on the role of the pop star. Based on the teaser, specifically a quick shot of a billboard for the recent Apple TV+ movie Cha Cha Really Smooth (which may or may not make the final cut), a contemporary setting is likely.

co-stars on the idol including fellow pop sensation Troye Sivan, Debby Ryan, Rachel Sennott, Steve Zissisand Melanie Liburd. Just like they do with EuphoriaA24 produces the show along with Bron Creative, Little Lamb and HBO. Amy Seimetz (the murder, Alien: Covenant) was initially set to direct all six episodes, though she dropped out earlier this year due to creative changes. Levinson stepped in to direct the series as soon as Seimetz quit. Production recently ended after extensive reshoots and casting changes.

The Weeknd is currently on its After Hours til Dawn Tour, and he premiered the trailer during his performance at MetLife Stadium this weekend. HBO continues to score highly on the success of Euphoria (who just landed several Primetime Emmy nominations), and the idol seems to give that same demographic another project to enjoy.
