AN AIRCRAFT caught fire before crashing in a massive fireball explosion on a mountainside in Greece.
The plane – believed to have weapons to Ukraine – had eight crew members on board when it ran into trouble near the town of Kavala.
State television Ert reported that the plane was an Antonov An-12 belonging to a Ukrainian company flying from Serbia to Jordan.
The pilot had requested an emergency landing due to a problem with one of the four engines, but the signal was lost.
Video footage uploaded to ertnews.gr showed the plane rapidly descending in flames before hitting the ground in what appeared to be an explosion.
People near the crash site told local media how they saw a fireball and heard a series of explosions after the crash.
The fire service said it deployed 15 firefighters and seven motorcycles to extinguish the blaze that broke out after the crash, while more rescuers were on the way.
A major search and rescue operation has been launched.
