Staff at the chic Hotel Continentiale in the heart of Florence called the police after the woman asked for help.

Doctors rushed her to Careggi Hospital, where she is said to be in a serious but stable condition. Daily mail.

The couple – believed to be from Manchester – arrived at the hotel Friday evening and called for help early Saturday morning.

A police source told the publication that both involved are Britons who may have been involved in an erotic game that went awry in their hotel room.

The source said police were also assessing whether this was a domestic violence case, although the “general direction is that of an erotic game”.

They said: “The man was found with a series of cuts, bruises and other injuries on his body and so was the woman, although she was more seriously injured and the man appears to have had some sort of seizure.

“There is blood in the room and forensic teams are working there while the woman is taken to hospital for treatment.

“Her current condition is serious, but she is stable and her injuries are not life-threatening. We hope to be able to interrogate her sometime in the next few hours.”

Italian outlet Florence today claims that staff found the woman covered in blood as she called for help in the hotel hallway.

La Republic claims the woman told staff she saw the 41-year-old collapse to the ground.

The man is believed to have died of a heart attack, according to… La Nazione.

The outlet also reported that 118 health workers were at the hotel.

They had arrived at the Continentale in Vicolo dell’Oro – which a holiday guide revealed costs £350 a night to stay in – around 2am.

It has a rooftop bar and spa and is the place to be for “honeymooners and those looking for a romantic weekend”.

A source said: “The woman had raised the alarm after a maid knocked on the door, but some guests had already called reception to report screaming and banging coming from the room.”

Local magistrate Ester Nocera has launched an investigation into the death and was at the scene talking to witnesses.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth and Development said it is in contact with the Italian police.
