Michael Carrick takes charge
Manchester United would sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last Sunday following an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford on Saturday.
Solskjaer leaves the Red Devils languishing in mid-table in the Premier League, with their place in the Champions League knockout rounds also not secure yet.
For the time being, Manchester United have put Michael Carrick, previously a coach under Ole, in charge of the squad till an interim boss is named:
Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season.
Rangnick’s Luke Shaw comments
Now though, despite Carrick guiding Manchester United to a 2-0 win over Villarreal and securing their spot in the Champions League knockout rounds, the Red Devils appear to have wasted very little time in finding an interim boss.
News broke on Thursday from the very reliable David Ornstein that Manchester United had reached an agreement with Ralf Rangnick to become their interim manager for the remainder of the season before then moving into a two-year consultancy role:
🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd reach agreement with Ralf Rangnick to become interim manager. 6mnth contract then 2yr consultancy. Deal subject to Lokomotiv Moscow approval. Work permit process prevents 63yo leading #MUFC v Chelsea. W/ @lauriewhitwell @TheAthleticUK https://t.co/wjQyiRzfeE

But, amid his seemingly imminent move to Manchester, previous comments on the part of Rangnick have surfaced.
Said comments show the former Hoffenheim coach offering a very damning assessment of Luke Shaw, suggesting that he is not sure if the left-back is still on the same level you need to be for a club like Manchester United:
“I also think that they could do with a left-back. I know they have Luke Shaw but I’m not so sure if he’s still on the same level that you need to be for a club like Manchester United.”
