Klopp’s side make it 5 wins from 5

Liverpool made it five wins from five in the Champions League group stages thanks to goals from Thiago and Mo Salah, helping them defeat Porto 2-0 at Anfield.

In a game dominated by the hosts, Thiago opened the scoring with a sublime strike, with the ball remaining just a few centimetres above the ground at all times.

Mo Salah, never one to miss out on a goal, doubled his side’s tally later in the second half, with a trademark left-footed finish.

However, the game quickly lost the focus of the post match press conference.

Klopp accused of belittling the Africa Cup of Nations

Now, in an altogether strange turn of events, manager Jurgen Klopp was set upon by a reporter after he had previously described the Africa Cup of Nations as a “little tournament” in his pre-match press conference.

Liverpool, of course, are set to lose Mo Salah, Joel Matip, Naby Keita and Sadio Mane to the tournament, with the quartet set to fly out on boxing day, and may not return until the end of January.

Ahead of the Porto clash, when one of the journalists mentioned that there was no international break until March, Klopp responded with “just a little tournament in Africa”, which, although clearly sarcastic in tone, was received poorly.

Indeed, one reporter went as far as to call it “an insult to the players, an insult to the fans, an insult to the people, and an insult to the continent”.

Klopp, however, has reiterated that he only meant it in an ironic way, and that perhaps the humour was lost across the language barrier.

Klopp responded that “it was not even an idea in my mind that I want to talk about AFCON as a little tournament” before encouraging the reporter to watch the full press conference.
