NBCNEWS – Italy international Nicolo Zaniolo is beginning to understand his new tactical role at Roma and admits Jose Mourinho taught him not to settle down.

The 22-year-old started tonight’s 4-0 European Conference League win over Zorya Luhansk and scored, as well as provided an assist for Tammy Abraham.

Carles Perez also performed very well with Abraham completing his two goals at the Stadio Olimpico.

“More than for me, it was an important win for the team. It was not an easy situation, but we believe now that we will at least resume the competition,” Zaniolo told Sky Sport Italia.

The result secured at least a top two finish, but for now they will have to wait until their final Group C game to ensure they advance to the last 16.

There have been reports that the former Inter Milan man was mentally ‘taken down’ by Mourinho after a dispute over his tactical role, but Zanilo has looked motivated and is now developing as a trequartista behind the strikers.

“I can play there, I can play wide, I can play anywhere up front. The coach told me to play there and I am ready to help the team completely.”

“Sitting on the bench makes me reflect, I accept the coach’s decision. I like being under pressure and giving my response on the pitch.”

Zaniolo was also asked what he has learned from working with Mourinho so far this season at Roma.

“Mourinho taught me not to settle for good performances, that we must always ask for more from ourselves and keep improving.”
