PSSI General Chair Mochamad Iriawan said the AFF Cup was quite important for the Indonesian national team. The Garuda squad must overcome their curiosity because they have never won.
Indonesia is one of the countries that often enter the final of the AFF Cup, it is recorded that they have lost five times or only lost to Thailand (eight times) but have not won once.
Since it was first rolled out in 1996, the highest achievement of the Indonesian national team in the AFF Cup is being runner-up in five editions, namely in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010 and 2016.
“AFF is quite important for us, because it is to test the performance of the national team in ASEAN,” said Mochamad Iriawan in a discussion with the media crew in Jakarta.
“We (PSSI) must be able to prove to the public that we (Indonesian National Team) can become champions, as a valuable experience as well,” he added.
Iwan Bule, the general greeting of the PSSI chairman, also wants the Garuda squad to take revenge against Vietnam after losing in the 2019 SEA Games final and losing in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers.
He was quite sure that the Indonesian national team spoke a lot in the AFF Cup, after being coached by Shin Tae-yong.
“Hopefully Vietnam can reply there (AFF). We can see their bodies. (players) are quite strong when fighting with opponents, “said Mochamad Iriawan about the strength of the national team under Shin Tae-yong’s tutelage.
The 2020 AFF Cup will be held in Singapore from 5 December 2021 to 1 January 2022. PSSI targets the Indonesian national team to become champions for the first time. The Indonesian national team is in Group B with Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos.
