Montenegro had previously managed to upset Louis van Gaal’s men on matchday ninth, four days ago, after coming back from two goals down to level the score at 2-2 near the end.

This time too they surprised Turkey by taking the lead through Fatos Beqiraj’s goal when the match had not yet entered the fourth minute. But Turkey hit back strongly with Galatasaray striker Kerem Akturkoglu’s goal in the 22nd minute, before Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kokcu sealed the three points for the Crescent Moon side.

The match at Podgorica City Stadium was played with ball dominance under the visitors’ control, reaching 67 per cent and they had 16 attempted goals, eight strikes on target and two goals.

Before the match on Wednesday morning started, the Netherlands (20 points) still lead the Group G standings with a two-point advantage over Turkey (18) and Norway (18). If Martin Odegaard and his colleagues manage to beat the Oranje, then there is a golden opportunity for Turkey to take over the top of the standings with a win in Montenegro.

But that bad hope didn’t come true. After a thrilling 0-0 scoreline for almost 90 minutes, two Dutch goals finally came through Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay, giving them 23 points and the certainty of qualifying straight for Qatar. Turkey is second in Group G with 21 points and will undergo the play-offs.
