NBCNEWS – Australia national team coach Graham Arnold is confident his team will return to winning ways against China on Tuesday (11/16/2021) CET, and the former Vegalta Sendai manager is confident his side will secure qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In their first game back on Australian soil since 2019, the Socceroos drew 0-0 against Saudi Arabia in front of 23,314 fans at Western Sydney Stadium.

Mathew Leckie et al were unable to penetrate the disciplined defense of Saudi Arabia and were only able to take advantage of counter-attack opportunities.

Despite losing two points against The Green Falcons last Thursday (11/11/2021), Arnold remains optimistic about the appearance of his team.

“I just told the boys they should be very proud of their fantastic effort,” said Arnold post-match.

“I’m someone who always looks on the positive side of things and as I said to the players in the dressing room, it was one of those nights where the ball couldn’t get into the net.

“I can’t complain about the performance and the effort was great. The only thing you can ask for is an effort like that with a lot of energy but it’s one game at a time and it’s game over.”

“I’ve been thinking about the China game and I just told the players that the most important thing now is recovery.”

The Socceroos now have 10 points from their opening five Group B games and three points behind group leaders Saudi Arabia with five games remaining.

The top two teams from the group will qualify automatically for the World Cup, while the country that finishes in third place will enter a play-off against the third-placed team from Group A, followed by an intercontinental play-off.

Australia is one point clear of Japan, who are third with nine points, while Oman are fourth with seven points. Arnold himself insisted that the results of these five qualifying matches were still in their control.

“We are in a good place, everything is in our hands (qualified for the 2022 World Cup),” he explained.

“If you have something in your hands you are in a great position rather than having to rely on other results.”

The most important thing now is that we go and play against China and get the three points and have a great Christmas.”

The last time the Socceroos and China met was in September, Australia claimed a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Awer Mabil, Martin Boyle and Mitchell Duke.
