Viruses are the most common cause of sore throat. Strep throat is generally caused by a viral infection such as a cold, flu, or mononucleosis. Viral infections cannot be cured with antibiotics, and treatment is usually done only to relieve symptoms.

Bacterial infections are a less common cause of strep throat. If it is caused by bacteria, then strep throat needs to be cured with antibiotics. The most common bacterial infection that causes strep throat is streptococcus A. Meanwhile, other bacterial infections that are less likely to cause strep throat are gonorrhea, chlamydia, and corynebacterium.

Getting the flu too often will also increase your risk of developing strep throat. Being second-hand smoke can also increase the risk of strep throat.

The rate of transmission is also influenced by the cause of strep throat. If it is caused by a viral infection, then you can pass it on until the fever subsides. If it’s caused by bacteria, then chances are you can transmit it up to 24 hours after taking antibiotics.

blood test

If your doctor suspects that your strep throat is caused by something else, then he or she may suggest that you have a blood test done. The blood sample will then be sent to a laboratory for further examination. This test can determine whether you are infected with the mononucleosis virus.
